Climate and Temperature

The climate of North Bengal and Sikkim varies between the tropical heat of the valleys and the alpine cold of the snowy regions. With rainfall averaging 348 cms, it is the most humid region of the Himalayas. Dry season is from November to April. The altitude zones of vegetation range from tropical, sub tropical, temperate to Alpine – some places only 10 kms in a direct line separates the palm growing valleys from perpetual snow. The telescoping of terrain - from the pleasant humid foothill valleys below 1000 meters, to the arctic cold of the snow capped peaks up to 8000 meters, has created marked altitude zonation in the humidity, rainfall, climate and vegetation.

Below are the details of climate and temperature of each holiday destinations in North Bengal and Sikkim. 

Darjeeling: has a moderate climate with all five distinct seasons in a year.

* Spring (February-March) is charming with temperate climate. This season is best with scenic beauties

* Summers (April-June) are mild with maximum temperature never crossing 25°C. The pleasant climate attracts lots of tourists during this season.

* Monsoons (July-August) are accompanied with intense torrential rain causing roadblocks.

* Autumn (September-November) is accompanied with intermittent showers and Darjeeling looks marvellous during this period.

* Winters (December-January) have a cool climate within the average range of 5°C to 7°C. Minimum temperature this season can be freezing -2°C. Snowfalls are not common during winters. Take woollen clothes in winters and may avoid chilly days in January.

Mirik: The climate of Mirik is temperate. The main seasons here are summer, monsoon and winters.

* Summers (March-June) in Mirik are not hot. April is the hottest month and temperatures during this time can reach a maximum of 30°C. Temperatures will reach a minimum of 15°C. This is an ideal time to visit the place.

* Monsoons (July-September). During this month temperatures fall significantly and the hill town is drenched by frequent and persistent showers. The town is at its full bloom during this time. 

* Winter (October-February) is pleasant through its early stages and cold towards the later stages of the season and this is a good time to visit Mirik too. Temperatures may fluctuate during this time, reaching a maximum of 20°C and a minimum of around one degree 1°C during the winter season.

Gangtok has a subtropical highland climate, highly influenced by the monsoons. The place experiences a mild, temperate climate, and remains conformable throughout the year. It passes though five distinctive seasons in the year.

* Spring (March-May) is quite sunny and warm.The best season to visit Gangtok is during autumn and spring time

* Summer (April end-June) the weather during this time is mild with the average temperature ranging from a maximum of 22°C and a minimum of 13°C. In fact, the summer temperature rarely crosses 25°C.

* Monsoons (July-early September) are the time when Gangtok experiences heavy downpour with the rains often causing heavy landslides. Gangtok registers an average of 3890 mm of rainfall annually annum and is known to receive highest rainfall in the region.

* Autumn (September-October) during this time the temperature is comfortable and the weather gets less humid owning to the receding monsoon.

* Winter (November-early March) the winters here are characterized by foggy chilly mornings and cold nights. The average winter temperature is between 4°C and 7°C. Though snowfall here is rare now-a-days, it does get quite chilly during December and January with the temperature dipping to around 1°C.

Note above figures are of Gangtok - 5500 ft. Higher the altitude, lower the temperature and rainfall.

Tshangu: This town which experiences very harsh winters. The temperatures may vary according to the altitude of the places. Temperatures will be very mild during the summer months and extremely low during the winter months. 

Summers (May-June) in the town of Tshangu will experience temperatures that can rise to a peak of around 28°C. This is a very good time to visit the place, as the weather will be hospitable. 

Monsoons (July-September). These months experience rainfall due to the influence of the South West monsoon. Rainfall in Tshangu will range between moderate and heavy levels. 

Winters (October-February). These months will experience sub zero temperatures frequently, and temperatures can dip to levels of around -20°C depending on the altitude. It is not advisable to visit Tshangu during this time. 

Kalimpong: has five distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter and the monsoons. The annual temperature ranges from a high of 30°C to a low of 7°C.

Summers (March-June) are mild, with an average maximum temperature of 30°C. Kalimpong is just the perfect place to be in, during summers. This period is also one of the peak seasons for Kalimpong travel.

Monsoons (June-September) are severe, often causing landslides which sequester the town from the rest of India. During the monsoon and winter seasons, Kalimpong is often enveloped by fog.

Winter (September-mid February). Kalimpong, being a hilly region, experiences extremely chilly and frosty winters, with mercury dipping to about 70 C and with the maximum temperature being around 15°C. During the monsoon and winter seasons, Namchi: The climate of Namchi is temperate. The main seasons here are summer, monsoon and winters. The monsoon season in Namchi brings good rainfall.

Summers (March-June) are mild; these months will experience a maximum temperature of around 28°C and a minimum temperature of around 10°C. This is the best time to visit the town, due to the pleasant weather. You will need to carry mild

Monsoons (July-September) bring good rainfall and temperatures go down considerably.

Winters (October-February). These months will experience a maximum temperature of around 16°C and a minimum temperature that falls around -5°C. Carrying woolen clothing during this time is important. 

Pelling:The climatic conditions of Pelling are pleasant comfortable throughout the year. The main seasons of the year are summer, monsoon and winters.

Summers (March-May) are mild and pleasant conditions attract many visitors. The temperatures can soar up to 28°C and may fall to 10°C. Light winter clothes are essential.

Monsoons (June-November) Heavy rainfall is to be expected during the monsoon season and temperatures are mild during this time. The months of October and November are pleasant and this is the start of the tourist season.

Winters (December-February) are chilly. The temperatures may drop down to -5°C and the maximum temperatures

Lava: The weather of Lava is moderate with three important seasons.

Summers (March-May) are mild and this is the best time to visit. A refreshing cool breeze from the mountains can be experienced. The temperatures can reach a high of 20°C. The lowest expected summer temperature is around 10°C. 

Monsoons (June-September). During these months heavy rainfall is expected and this season is not suited for tourism. The post monsoon months before the advent of winter are a good time to visit.

Winters (December-February), temperatures may drop below 0°C. The highest temperature is around 10°C. If you are visiting during this period, it is advisable to travel with protective winter clothing. 

Pedong: has distinct five seasons and three important seasons.

Summers (March-early July): are mildly hot with temperature rising up to 30°C.

Monsoons (mid July-mid September). During these months heavy rainfall is expected. The monsoon is often long yet pleasant. The post monsoon months before the advent of winter are a good time to visit

Winters (December-February), temperatures may drop below -2°C. If you are visiting during this period, it is advisable

Lachen: The higher regions in Sikkim like Lachen will experience alpine climate. The main seasons in Lachen are summers, winters and the monsoon.

Summers (April- July), the best time to visit Lachen would be during these summer months, as temperatures will hit a maximum of 28°C during this time. Temperatures during night time will fall to low levels. 

Monsoons (August-October). During these months heavy rainfall is expected. This season experiences a significant drop in the average temperature. 

Winters (October-January), these months will experience a maximum temperature of around 3-4°C. The minimum temperature here will fall below sub zero level during the peak winter months. If you are visiting during this period, it is advisable to travel with protective winter clothing. 

Lachung:The town of Lachung experiences mild summers, very cold winters and a monsoon season. The best time to visit Lachung would be during the early summer months. The winter months are too cold for sightseeing purposes. The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to Lachung. 

Summers (March-June) in the town of Lachung are very mild, and temperatures will hit a maximum of around 28°C. The minimum temperature during the summer months will range around 10°C. This is an ideal time to visit Lachung, as the early summer months will be right for sightseeing.

Monsoons (July-September) in Lachung bring heavy rainfall due to the South West monsoon. The heavy rains during this time will plays killjoy with sightseeing plans.

Winters (October-January),these months will face a maximum temperature of 16°C and a minimum temperature of around 5°C. Snowfall can be commonly seen during this time in Lachung.

Yuksom:The climate of Yuksom is similar to the rest of Sikkim. It has three important seasons summer, monsoon and winters.

Summers (March-May) are pleasant and this is the best time to visit the place. The temperature rarely exceeds 30°C during the summer months. The lowest expected temperature is around 10°C. The pleasant conditions attract many tourists, trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. 

Monsoons (June-September), Rainfall prevents most outdoor activities during this period. The post monsoon months of October and November are ideal as temperatures are neither cold nor hot. 

Winters (December-February) are cold and temperatures fall below freezing point during this period. You can expect a maximum temperature of around 15°C during the winter season. Heavy woolen clothing is a must.

Yumthang Valley:The climate of Yumthang is similar to the rest of Sikkim. It has three important seasons summer, monsoon and winters. It is possible to visit the place only for a short period.

Summers (March-May) are the best time to visit and the conditions are pleasant and ideal for travel. This is the peak tourist season as the temperatures are mild. Day temperatures can drop down to a low of around 10 degrees Celsius during the summer season

Monsoons (June-September) experiences constant rainfall. It is possible to visit during this time however tourist activities are affected due to heavy rainfall.

Winters (December-February) are extremely harsh and the place is closed for tourism during this period as heavy snowfall blocks most of the roadways. Temperatures are well below the 0°C mark during this time. The month of January is the coldest month of the year. 

Lataguri: The climatic conditions of the region can be classified as a tropical type and there are three main seasons that can be experienced in the area. They are summer, monsoon and winter season. Humidity is generally high throughout the year.

Summers (March-May) are typically hot and the conditions can be uncomfortable during this period. The mercury can be expected to climb up to a high of around 37°C during the summer. The lowest expected temperature is around 27°C.

Monsoons (June-October) heavy rainfall lashes the region during the monsoon spell and relative humidity is also higher. The parks are closed during this period.

Winters (December-February), the region experiences pleasant conditions during the winter season and this is a good time to visit the place. The mercury dips to a low of around 10°C during the winter season. The maximum expected temperature is around 21°C.
